Matthew and Ilya met in CT in 2013. From the first meeting and the first rehearsal it felt like they knew how to end each other's phrases (while conversing or jamming!). This friendship and collaboration has bloomed into creating  cello and piano jazz duo - the "Unisons".

Matthew DeTroy - Piano
studied and graduated from Berklee College of Music in Boston with a focus on jazz piano and composition. Matthew performs extensively with several jazz bands in the local Fairfield area and has been involved in many recording projects. Matthew's brilliant piano technique in conjunction with his impeccable mastery of intuitive ensemble skills makes every performance an exciting endeavor. He can be heard playing jazz every Monday night at Fat Cat Pie in Norwalk with his jazz quartet.

Ilya Levitin - cello
Ilya Levitin - Cello
was born in Moscow and after immigrating to the US, finished his classical cello studies at the Manhattan School of Music in New York. Although Ilya has been touring Europe and the US as a classical cellist, (Tchaikovsky Chamber Orchestra, NYC - Principal Cellist; Orquesta Sinfonica de Castilla y Leon, Spain - Assistant Principal Cellist; Cello and Piano Duo "Musicianship", Spain) improvisation has always remained his passion. His collaboration with the Manhattan-based improvisational opera company “Play it by Ear” started the shift in his
performing career to a more concentrated focus on jazz standards. The combination of timeless classical technique with Ilya's resounding “Russian” cello sound creates a unique take on the jazz repertoire.
